Kenya Bird Watching Safaris

Day 1: Nairobi City
Arrival at Nairobi JKIA where you will be met by our representative and transferred to the city’s Olive Gardens Hotel for Overnight.

Day 2: Nairobi City – Mt. Kenya
Breakfast and then pick up by our driver and head north to Mount Kenya Region to arrive in time for lunch. After lunch relax or take an afternoon nap. You can make an optional visit to the Mau Mau caves; these caves were used as hideouts as well as shelter by the pre-independent freedom fighters that fought the British Colonial Government in the vast thick forests of Mt. Kenya and Aberdares Ranges. They are situated in the deep thick forests region with large terraces and great rocks. This made them ideal for protection against the heavy bombardments. (Optional excursion to visit Kikuyu Cultural Villages at an extra cost).

After lunch you may opt to spend the rest of the afternoon bird watching at the Naru Moru River Lodge grounds. Narumoru is an excellent birding spot especially at the lodge’s grounds and the small forest along the river. Here we will be looking for such species as Olive, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Cinnamon-Chested Bee-eater, Crowned and Silvery-Cheeked Hornbills, Cape Wagtail, Black Saw-wing, Yellow-Whiskered, Slender-Billed and Mountain Greenbuls, White-Starred Robin, Cape and Ruppell’s Robin Chats, African Dusky Flycatcher, Cinnamon Bracken Warbler, Hunter’s Cisticola, Chestnut-Throated, Grey and Black-Throated Apalis, Grey-Capped Warbler, White-Browed Crombec, Montane White-Eye, White-Bellied Tit, Tropical Boubou, Grey Cuckoo-Shrike, Montane Oriole, White-Headed Wood Hoopoe, Eastern and Northern Double-Collared Sunbird (among other six species), Brown-Capped Weavers, Thick-Billed Seed-Eater and Yellow-Crowned Canary. All meals and Overnight at Naromoru River Lodge.

Day 3: Mt. Kenya – Aberdares National Park
Breakfast and drive to Nyeri at the Outspan Hotel where a country style lunch will be served. In the afternoon you will be transferred into the Aberdares National Park to Treetops for an evening of nocturnal game watching. Dinner and overnight at Treetops.

Day 4: Aberdares – Lake Nakuru
Breakfast drive south and head west making a brief stopover at Thompson Falls and then drive southward to Lake Nakuru town to arrive in time for Dinner & overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Kakamega Forest
We leave Lake Nakuru and head to an isolated remnant of the equatorial rain forest that once spread over Africa from west to east. It contains an excellent representation of bird, animal, and plant species including an array of primates. Kakamega Forest through Eldoret. Kakamega forest’s avifauna is rich and unusual in its composition. Two globally threatened species reside here, Chapins Flycatcher and Turners Eremomela. The avifauna is unique not only nationally but also continentally. The forest holds large populations of Black and white colobus and Red tailed monkeys among others.Dinner and Overnight at Rondo Retreat Center

Day 6/7: Kakamega Forest
Full day bird walk at the eastern most extension of the great tropical rain forest stretching from west Africa. This forest is renowned for its uniqueness and richness in bird life and species like, Turners Eremomela, Black billed Turaco, Great blue turaco, Cameroon Sombre Green bull, Little grey Green bull, Yellow Bellied Wattle eye, Purple-throated cuckoo, Hairy Breasted Barbet, Grey breasted Illadopsis, African Grey Parrot, Square tailed drongo and Chapins Flycatcher. Lunch, Dinner and Overnight stay will be at Rondo Retreat Center or similar.

Day 8: Kakamega – Nairobi
After breakfast, leave for Nairobi to arrive in time for a transfer to JKI airport to fly back home.
